In the conclusion of our season finale, we continue our journey around the world to meet more Salvadorans. This time we listen to stories in English. We travel to Australia, Singapore, Finland, the United Kingdom, and Spain. Salvadorans are a global community and it’s about time we connect to our cousins beyond the United States.
Welcome to the last episode of the third season of Salvis Unidos Podcast. I’m your host, Carlos, and this is the second part of Salvadorans Around the World. Last time we listened to stories in Spanish for Salvis located in different corners of the world. This time, we’ll listen to stories in English in even more places.
When we started Salvis Unidos in New York City, we knew we eventually wanted to connect with Salvadorans everywhere. We knew that not all Salvadorans are in El Salvador and the US and that not all Salvadorans are lucky enough to speak Spanish. However, we knew that no matter where you are or what language you speak, odds are if you’re Salvadoran, you want to connect to other Salvadorans. So let’s get started on our journey, let’s listen and connect to these Salvis gracious enough to share their stories with us.
Rafael – Australia
This time, we’re starting in Australia with Rafael.
Karla – Singapore
The next stop on our tour is another island nation: Singapore! Believe it or not, Singapore is actually 29 times smaller than El Salvador! Karla tells us about her life in Singapore.
Julian – Finland
We’re leaving the tropical island climate and heading up north to Finland. Despite being much bigger than El Salvador, it has about 1 million less people living there. Let’s say “hei”, that’s Finnish for “hello” to Julian.
Elisabeth – Spain
We’ll head west to Spain, where Elisabeth shares a tale about the importance of family roots and remembering who we are.
David – UK
Up next, the United Kingdom, just a stone throw away from Spain. We’ll say hello to the Queen, but we’re really here to meet David Travers.
Caroline – Australia
The last stop on our journey takes us back to Australia to meet Caroline. She tells us how she stays connected desping being so far away from the homeland.
Thanks to everyone that participated in this project. We could not have done it without all the people brave enough to share their stories. And thank you to the listener. We do this all for you. I hope you’ve found stories to inspire you, stories that made you feel more connected to El Salvador, and stories that helped you feel less alone.
It’s hard to hang on to your culture. Many of us feel that we’re not Salvadoran enough, but there isn’t a single definition of what being Salvadoran is. If we’ve learned anything from these past sixty episodes and nearly seventy stories, it’s that all it takes is to be proud to be Salvadoran and have love for our country, culture, and people. Know that the love you carry in your heart for the homeland is enough to make you Salvadoran in our book.
This is the end of the season. If you just joined us, be sure to check out our other seasons and episodes. If you like the music featured in this podcast, check out our playlist on Spotify. All the artists we feature are Salvadoran. Find the link to it in our instagram profile. We’ll be taking a long break from publishing new episodes, so I hope you don’t miss us too much. Stay tuned to our Instagram to see when we’ll be back.
This is Carlos, signing off. Hasta la proxima. Salu!
